Have you avoided the Avocado in the past because you heard it has a high fat content? It is high in fat, however the fat in Avocado is mostly monounsaturated fat which is a healthy fat.
Monounsaturated fat is beneficial to your health in several ways:
Monounsaturated fat boosts the absorption of certain nutrients such as lycopene, carotenoids and lutein by several times when combined with other foods.
Avocados contain several different carotenoids and is especially high in the carotenoid Lutein. The Avocado is also high in Vitamin E. The monounsaturated fat aids the carotenoids absorption into the blood stream and this combination of nutrients inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
Vitamin E is also known for reducing inflammation and protecting the cells from damage and helps to protect against cardiovascular disease.
Lutein and zeaxanthin (also found in Avocados) are the only carotenoids found in the retina and lens of the eye. These carotenoids help to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.
Avocados significantly improve cholesterol levels. A study found that participants who ate Avocados every day for a week experienced an average 17% drop in total blood cholesterol. The participants LDL cholesterol levels (bad cholesterol) dropped and their HDL cholesterol levels (good cholesterol) significantly increased. Avocados are a rich source of the phytosterol beta-sitosterol which has been shown to contribute in the significant decrease in blood cholesterol levels by blocking the absorption of cholesterol.
Beta-sitosterol has also been shown to lower blood pressure.
Avocados contain glutathione a building block of protein. Research has shown that glutathione helps to prevent different types of cancers, including throat and oral cancer.
Avocado is a complete source of protein because it contains all the essential amino acids. Protein helps to curb the appetite and it also builds and repairs tissue. Avocado is also high in fiber which helps you to feel full longer.
Eating Avocado is a great supplement for the vitamins and minerals that you need because it is nutrient packed. Avocado is high in Vitamin C which helps to promote a healthy immune system, Vitamin K and Folate, which helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Avocado’s are high in Potassium which helps regulates blood pressure. And the Avocado is high in Copper which helps support healthy thyroid function and promotes strong bones and connective tissue and Vitamin B6 which helps support the nervous system and helps alleviate the risk of depression.
Here is the best part, Avocados are delicious! They are one of my favorite foods. My favorite way to eat the Avocado is to slice it, then sprinkle with olive oil, lemon juice, sea salt and pepper.
In short, Avocado does the body good!
